Cultivating Calm: International Meditation Day
In a world full of chaos and constant bustle, the importance of mindfulness and inner calm for young minds is very important. On 9 September 2025, St. Thomas Academy, in partnership with the Dwyer Foundation and the revered Dhamma Bodhi International Vipassana Meditation Centre of Bodh Gaya, commemorated International Meditation Day - Sadhana Diwas, bringing the gift of mindfulness, focus, and emotional balance to the students and faculty alike.
A Warm Welcome to Mindfulness
The event opened with a soulful address by Mrs. Priyanka, Principal of St. Thomas Academy. She extended heartfelt thanks to the meditation instructors Mr. Abhay Kumar and Mr. Ajay Bakshi, acknowledging their role in introducing meditation as a vital life skill to be aware of the mind. Mrs. Priyanka stressed the integration of mindfulness into academic life as a powerful tool for stress management, concentration enhancement, and emotional resilience among the students.
In a ceremony expressing gratitude and camaraderie, Mr. Priye Ranjan Dwyer, President of the Dwyer Foundation, presented mementos to the Instructors. This symbolic gesture celebrated their commitment to spreading the practice of Vipassana in educational institutions across Gaya.
Exploring Anapana Satti: The Heart of Vipassana Meditation
The highlight of the day was an interactive workshop led by Mr. Abhay Kumar, introducing the concept of Anapana Satti or mindful breathing - the foundational practice of Vipassana meditation. With simplicity and clarity, he explained:
- Ana means incoming breath
- Apana means outgoing breath
- Satti means mindfulness or awareness
Participants learned how attentive observation of natural breathing cultivates concentration, patience, and emotional regulation - crucial for academic success and holistic well-being. Mr. Kumar encouraged the audience to engage in twice-daily Anapana meditation for 10 minutes, followed by 2 minutes of Metta Bhavana (loving-kindness meditation), nurturing empathy and strengthening interpersonal relationships in the school community.
When children learn to be calm within, they grow into confident, compassionate individuals capable of transforming their world.

The Transformative Stillness: Guided Meditation Session
The 70-minute guided meditation session was a profound experience for the students. As silence gently enveloped the auditorium, students and teachers shed distractions to embrace the rhythm of their breath. Many participants later described an overwhelming sense of calm, clarity, and refreshed minds, as stress seemed to dissolve.
Teachers noted an immediate uplift in their own patience and mental focus, qualities they eagerly anticipated modeling for their students. The presence and participation of Principal Mrs. Priyanka Dwyer and Mr. Dwyer underscored the vital role of mindful leadership - practicing what they preach to inspire the entire school community.
Embedding Mindfulness in the School Culture
In his closing remarks, Mr. Priye Ranjan Dwyer thanked everyone for their enthusiasm and emphasized that mindfulness is a lifelong practice, not a singular event. He announced plans for regular meditation programs at St. Thomas Academy to bolster student focus, discipline, and overall well-being.
This initiative aligns with Dwyer Foundation's broader mission, which includes mental health awareness, skill development, and holistic community upliftment across Gaya and Bihar.
Lasting Impressions of Sadhana Diwas
The Meditation Day celebration was more than a spiritual exercise - it was a collective awakening to the power of stillness and mindfulness in education. Through Vipassana and Anapana Sati practice, the school community discovered that true learning blossoms best from a peaceful and receptive mind.
Serenity lingered as the session closed, visible in the calm smiles of students and faculty. The day was a tender reminder that education nurtures not just intellect but also awareness, empathy, and harmony.
Shaping Balanced Future Leaders
With such visionary initiatives, St. Thomas Academy and the Dwyer Foundation are setting a shining example of how education and wellness combine to shape balanced, resilient, and compassionate future leaders - individuals who excel not only academically but also in inner peace and strength.
